The school is
actively involved in works for
charity, both for the local and wider community and visitors
to
assembly tell the pupils of a variety of health and
community
initiatives. The largest single event, which raises about
£2000
annually, is the Sponsored Walk, which supports local
children’s
charities chosen by the boys. National events like Red Nose
Day
receive enthusiastic support and at Christmas, members of
each tutor
group club together to make up gifts for needy people in the
local
area or in a troubled part of the world. In 2003, we are
again
providing shoe-boxes full of gifts for Operation Christmas
Child.
The
Personal and Social Education Programme
brings many adults into school, including the Police,
Transport
Police, First Aid Trainers, Cycle Safety Instructors, The
Fire
Service and the Health Education Unit. Several groups have
staged
drama presentations with a moral, social or health message.
Sponsored
by local businesses, the Technology
Department has, for some years, designed and constructed
vehicles
that have competed successfully in national competitions and
we are
currently forging stronger links with science-based
industries as we
pursue our ambition to become a Specialist Science College.
The
Art Department has frequent links with the
Midlands Art Centre and the Music and Drama departments
participate
in many local contexts.
The
Old Nortonians' Football Club continues to
base its three teams at the school and there are regular
bookings by
a Little League Football club. Occasional bookings are taken
for the
Hall, field or outbuildings but security and supervision
considerations limit the amount of community use there can
be of the
site. |
