Method of Examination:

Examination Board: Northern Examinations and Assessment Board,

Syllabus 'A' Art and Design (Unendorsed)

Coursework: minimum 3 assignments 60%

Terminal Examination: one assignment 40%

This course aims to develop a broad understanding of Art and Design. It offers opportunity for self-expression and heightens visual and intellectual awareness through direct participation in practical work.

Candidates must present a minimum of three coursework assignments built up over a period of four terms and must include work from two or more areas of study. Some of the media and processes offered include: development of painting and drawing techniques, including oils, acrylics, watercolours and various mark making materials, ceramic design incorporating sculpture, modelling and various surface decoration processes, jewellery incorporating art metalwork and applied design, and finally printmaking incorporating the use of lino, block and screen printing processes.

The emphasis of the course is to provide active, practical lessons in creative working environments. Pupils are encouraged to experiment through the inventive use of materials and techniques. They will have the chance to explore the opportunities of Art and Design, develop confidence in working independently, make decisions and make effective personal and original responses.

All work is developed through a process which involves research and preparation, creative and imaginative ideas, the use and understanding of other artists' and designers' work in the development of ideas and in the making and production of conclusions and critical responses.

During the two years pupils will have the opportunity to work with visiting artists and through visits to galleries experience, first hand, famous works of art.

In Year 11, all the skills, processes and understanding are put to the test in a ten-hour examination. This is a major assignment chosen by the pupil from a range of projects set by the examination board. Finally pupils present their work in an exhibition for the department and examination moderator to assess.

Although the course can be demanding with continuous and independent study involving sketchbook work, homework and work outside lessons, it will also be very rewarding, exciting and enjoyable in which artistic potential can be fully realised. Pupils will need to be determined, enthusiastic and imaginative.

Many pupils have enjoyed success in Art and Design with very encouraging examination results and increasing numbers staying on to the Sixth Form to study 'A' level or going on to various colleges including Bournville College of Art and the University of Central England.
