Biology at KNBS is
taught as part of the Science Curriculum at Key Stages 3 and 4, and
as a separate 'A' Level in the Sixth Form.
We follow the
'Science Now' programme of study at Key Stage 3, and the NEAB
modular science GCSE at Key Stage 4. Separate modules for the 3
Sciences enable specialist teachers to cover each subject area at
Key Stage 4.
We use living
material to teach biology where possible, in an ethical and
sustainable way. Specimens are often utilised
in a non invasive manner, and we are presently trialling a number of
novel plant biology activities inspired by the SAPs programme.
We have a policy of
not performing dissection of whole animals, instead we make use of
certain abattoir materials which in many cases would otherwise be
wasted. Pupils not wishing to participate are always able to select
alternative activities.
Fieldwork forms an
important part of the curriculum, and pupils are taught a range of
scurreging techniques. This normally takes place in the school
grounds, at a nearby pond and the Lickey Hills Country Park.
There is also a
biology field course which takes place in the Lower Sixth, run in
conjunction with the neighbouring girls' school, and based at
Aberystwith University in July. this forms part of the A Level
course, and in addition to teaching a comprehensive range of
fieldwork techniques and aspects of classification, gives students a
welcome opportunity to sample University life.
Where possible, we
attempt to broaden pupils' interest in the subject beyond the limits
of the National Curriculum.
