The English
Curriculum is taught at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, covering a wide
range of specialist areas including Media Studies, Poetry, Drama and
Creative Writing.
At KS/3, all pupils
experience both modern and traditional texts, helping them to
develop language skills and awareness of literary traditions. From
Year 8, boys are banded according to ability, with end of year
examinations providing opportunities for movement across bands.
At KS/4, pupils
follow the NEAB syllabus, allowing candidates to achieve GCSE grades
in two different subjects: English and English Literature.
Theatre visits, use
of drama and video give all boys a chance to pursue areas of
interest, while the NPRA Scheme provides a supportive alternative to
GCSE.
Pupils are
encouraged to produce attractive and original work, with competition
entries providing recent national success.
Shakespeare texts
are studied during the five years, through exam at KS/3 and GCSE
coursework at KS/4. Furthermore, recent additions to the text lists
have provided further exiting opportunities for boys to enjoy
English as they progress throughout the school.
Knowledge and
experience gained provide an excellent foundation for boys wishing
to pursue English or English Literature at 'A' Level.
