"People & The Physical World"

The hydrological cycle, river process and landforms, river flooding and control coastal process and landforms, coastal erosion and control seismic and volcanic activity.

 

"People & Places To Live'

The uneven Distribution of population, population structure and growth, international migration, rural to urban migration, land use in urban areas, the quality of life in cities, traffic and traffic management, urban and rural services, urban to rural migration.

 

Specific Skills:    OS map interpretation and explanation (symbols, co-ordinates, compass points, linear scale, spot heights, contours), plotting line, bar and pie charts, scatter graphs, describing values, changes, trends and relationships from graphs and diagrams: line graphs,. bar graphs (simple, parallel, superimposed compound and percentage - including population pyramids), star diagrams, pie charts, flow charts, divided rectangle, histograms, triangular graphs,. satellite imagery, ground, aerial photograph description, interpretation and explanation, correlation of photographs with maps, drawing cross sections, sketch map interpretation and drawing, atlas map interpretation and explanation, interpretation and explanation of isoline, choropleth and other distribution maps, numeracy; counting, ranking, classifying, hypothesis formulation and testing, fieldwork

(e.g. river channel and valley measurements and observations, environmental quality analysis, land use classification), formulation of conclusions and evaluation of procedures), ICT (use of CD ROM, data bases, spreadsheets, graph drawing).

Parental Support / Extension Work:

Creation of a portfolio of newspaper l magazine cutting on topics covered, watching, discussion of topical T V programmes, recording BBC2 and Channel 4 "Schools " programmes including BBC 2's " Bite Size revision " provision of an atlas, use of OS maps on holiday, creation of a dictionary of key terms, testing knowledge of key terms.
