Yr 7 Programme of Study


      


 

'Home Start" 

The physical and human geography of the local area, sketch maps, grid references scale, describing routes from maps, using maps and aerial photographs, local area enquiry, a comparison of the locality with other localities.

 

"City Search"

The location of major UK cities, the choice of settlement site, the growth of Tokyo, settlement hierarchies, migration to Nairobi.

 

"Water Sources"

The world's major rivers, drainage basin features, infiltration rates and surfaces, the water cycle, the supply of fresh water, the effects of the building of the Aswan Dam.

 

Water Problems"

River basin features, flood hydrographs, flooding and flood alleviation in Bangladesh, river pollution and pollution control

 

"Weather Watching" 

Keeping a weather diary, the difference between weather and climate, the microclimate of the school,  UK upland areas, the different ways rain forms, the UK pattern of rain, the weathering of rocks.

 

Specific Skills: Interpretation of: O.S. maps, photographs, drawing sketch maps, aerial photographs, drawing and interpretation of bar and pie charts, hypothesis formulation and testing, ICT (graph drawing, word processing, CD ROM use), atlas work, problem solving, use of infiltrometer and weather instruments, role play participation, field observation and recording.

 Assessment: Grade awarded for achievement, effort and target meeting. See information in student's exercise book for details.

 Parental Support / Extension Work: Creation of a portfolio of newspaper / magazine cutting on topics covered, watching, discussion of topical T.V programmes, recording BBC2 and Channel 4 "Schools " programmes including BBC 2's " Bite Size revision " provision of an atlas, use of OS maps on holiday, creation of a dictionary of key terms, testing knowledge of key terms.
