"Earth Movements"

The distribution of earthquakes and volcanoes, volcano form and activity, crustal activity and Japan’s and Kenya’s physical geography, variations in effects and responses to earthquakes, tsunamis.

 

"Tales Of The River Banks"

River processes, the shapes of valleys, waterfalls, and gorges, fieldwork enquiries into changes in valley shape and meanders.

 

"Private Investigations"

Identification of a geographical problem, enquiry to investigate the problem, presentation of findings.

 

"World Of Sport"

Olympic cities, Olympic success and economic well-being, settlement size, and football success, the location of stadia.

 

"The Heat Is On"

Seasons, global variations in temperatures, the equatorial climate, hurricanes.

 

"Tropical Troubles"

Tropical rainforests and climate, shifting cultivation and the rainforest ecosystem, rainforest destruction, sustainable development of rainforests.

 

Specific Skills: Atlas work, report writing, hypothesis formulation and testing, enquiry research, graph construction and analysis, role play participation, satellite and false colour imagery interpretation, problem solving, ICT.

Assessment: Grade awarded for achievement, effort and target meeting. See student's exercise book for details.

 

Parental Support /Extension Work:                 

Creation of a portfolio of newspaper / magazine cutting on topics covered, watching, discussion of topical T V programmes, recording BBC2 and Channel 4 "Schools " programmes including BBC 2's " Bite Size revision " provision of an atlas, use of 05 maps on holiday, creation of a dictionary of key terms, testing knowledge of key terms.
