Physics

Students follow combined science course up to G.C.S.E. level. Members of the physics department teach all these courses, and all boys in years 10 and 11 have physics taught by specialist physicists. A-level groups are run in conjunction with the nearby girls school. We follow the London University modular A-level course. These modules can be examined in either January or June, and maybe re-sat if a suitable grade has not been achieved. The course allows students to choose optional modules, and this year the Upper sixth are studying the astrophysics and particle physics options.

Physics is not all about studying. A group from year 9 are soon going to Birmingham University for "A Taste of Physics" - a half-day event on the applications of physics. Every year a group from year 10 spend an enjoyable day on a course at Warwick University. Groups of A-level students regularly attend sixth form lectures at Birmingham University. A recent innovation has been a three day physics field trip for A-level students. Based at Dolgellau youth hostel this looked at energy sources in North Wales, including pump-storage schemes, wind power, nuclear power and alternative energy sources. The visit to Carno wind farm was the highlight - to stand inside the giant windmills while a gentle breeze coaxed their blades into motion was an exhilarating experience.

At King's Norton Boys' the physics department tries to provide good A-level teaching in an informal and enjoyable atmosphere.
