Head
of Department:
Mr.
A. P. Lomas B.Th(Hons) PGCE CCRS
The
aims of Religious Education at KNBS are in line with the
attainment
targets found in the Birmingham Agreed Syllabus, which the
school
adopted in September 1997.
The attainment targets laid
out by the syllabus are twofold:
Firstly, pupils should
learn about religion. At KNBS, the Religious Education
Department
works to ensure that the pupils obtain knowledge of the main
features of the world's religions, so that they can
recognise the
beliefs and practices of religious adherents.
Secondly,
pupils should learn from religion. This aspect of R.E is
concerned
with according proper respect to young people, rather than
treating
them as passive receivers of information. Learning from
religion is
about giving pupils the opportunity to affirm their beliefs,
to
articulate their ideas, beliefs and values and by so doing
learn to
clarify who they are and what they believe in.
What
have we done this year?
You
can look on these pages to find out how RE contributes to
the life
of KNBS. Here are a few examples.
Samaritan’s Purse Shoe
Box appeal, YPP for Yr.9 moral dilemmas, RE Poetry
Competitions,
Model Building, Trial lessons for Religion & Science,
Crossword
Competition, Entered The Templeton Award for Religion and
Science.
The list goes on and on.
The
R.E. department at KNBS implements the Agreed Syllabus using
a
variety of methods.
In Year 7, pupils study
topics such as; Muhammad, Fundamental Questions and the
religion of
Sikhism. All pupils take part in a trip to a local Gurdwara.
In Year 8, pupils study
topics such as Easter, Signs & Symbols and Pacifism.
In Year 9, pupils look at
pilgrimage for Muslims and Christians. They also look at the
role of
the family for themselves and for people from various
religious
traditions.
In Years 10 and 11, pupils
study a variety of responses to contemporary moral issues
such as
abortion, euthanasia, death etc.
As
pupils move through the school, they should develop the
skills
involved in coming to a mature understanding of the
religion. It
should enlarge and deepen the pupils understanding of those
elements
of human experience which raise questions about life's
ultimate
meaning and value.
All
pupils will study GCSE RE Short Course as we feel that it is
essential that our pupils gain accreditation for the work
they have
been doing in RE.
We
encourage pupils to take the GCSE RE Full Course as an
option. Many
of the lads who have chosen this in the past have said how
they have
appreciated the time to study and discuss issues in more
depth and
detail, they felt that coursework was also a helpful way to
try and
improve their results.

and
Spirituality. This lesson was about Worship.
Mr
Lomas brought in Candles, Crucifix and Altar Cloths
and made a
table look like an altar. He demonstrated the
clothes
that Priests wear (vestments).
In
the picture you can see a Chasuble, a Cotta and a
Cassock. There are also items of devotion:
Rosary, Icon,
Statue, Bible, Incense & Candles.
As
you can see the pupils were hard at work on the
activities!
