In
year 10, the
majority of students will start a balanced Science
course
which will lead to the award of two identical grades
at GCSE.
The
course followed is AQA
Double Award Co-ordinated Science, which covers all
aspects of
the National Curriculum, including Biology, Chemistry ,
Physics and a small amount of Earth Science.
In a
two week period,
students will be taught for 3 one hour sessions by a
specialist biologist, 3 hours by a chemist and 3 hours
by a
physicist, so all three disciplines are covered
continually.
There
are three 1½
examinations at the end of the course, in each of the
three
areas, carrying equal weight and making up 80% of the
final
marks between them. The remaining 20% of the
marks come
from coursework which is carried out during Key Stage
4.
Science coursework consists principally of internally
assessed
practical investigation and other experimental work.
Students
achieving good
grades in this course should be well equipped to
progress to
Advanced Level in any of the individual science
subjects.
A
small number of students
will follow a single award course which covers less
material
and carries a single GCSE grade at the end. |
